Faculty Member, Study of Religions
Professor (em.)
About
My specialist interests over many years have been in the study of Buddhism (especially Mahayana Buddhism) and of Japanese religions in general. I have also thought and written quite a lot about the identity and the methodology of "the study of religions" (Religionswissenschaft). This has gone hand in hand with active roles in the International Association for the History of Religions (IAHR, President 1995-2000) and the European Association for the Study of Religions (EASR). As a retired professor of a German university (Philipps-Universität Marburg, i.e. the University of Marburg) I remain a member of it in a limited sense and am engaged in trying to complete various writings. For more information, see the Marburg staff homepage.
Following a visiting professorship at Otani University (大谷大学) in Kyoto (2005-2008) I continue there as a Research Associate of the Institute for the Comprehensive Study of Shin Buddhism (真宗総合研究所) with special reference to International Buddhist Studies (国際仏教研究).
